1. Male ash flower galls, caused by a mite, are forming on male ash cultivars. Last years brown or black galls are still present. Unsightly, but does not harm tree health.

2. Reports of Sphaeropsis Tip Blight in Pine trees in Douglas County. In Nebraska, a fungicide application made during the third week in April and repeated the first week in May provides optimum disease control in most years. Fungicides applied after mid-May are usually ineffective.

3. Mushrooms in turf. Form on organic matter. Other than fairy ring – usually not a serious problem.

4. Possible Clematis Wilt reported in Douglas county: Clematis (entire plant or individual vines) suddenly yellow and die back; then grow back from the roots.

5. Tussock Moth was diagnosed in Douglas County by a non Extension source. On inspection, symptoms were not consistent with Tussock Moth, but Cytospora canker. Jim Schild reports tussock moth has caused severe defoliation on Spruce in western Nebraska in years past, with homeowner calls typically beginning in June.

6. Cytospora Canker on Spruce and Concolor Fir reported in Douglas, Dodge and Platte County: No fungicide controls. Prune dead branches and avoid stress.

7. Oak rough bullet gall identified in Lancaster county.

8. Bagworms being found on evergreens (reported for Dodge and Colfax county). Insecticide application timing is late May into early June.

9. Yellow Nutsedge is beginning to grow in Douglas county.

10. Pine Wilt continues to appear more and more on Scotch pine, especially in eastern half of the state. Since Pine Sawyer Beetles emerge in May, dead Scotch pine trees should be removed and destroyed ASAP. They can be chipped and used as mulch.

11. Pre-emergent Control of Sandburs. On lawns, apply Pendimethalin granules the first week of June. On sandy beaches – apply Rodeo post emergence.

12. Bluegrass and Denver Billbug reported in Scottsbluff County.

13. Sod Webworm damage reported in Scottsbluff County.

Watch For:
14. Honeylocust plant bug

15. Dothistroma needle blight- fungicide applications best applied mid May and mid to late June.

16. Pine tip blight

17. Zimmerman pine moth- damage often found in Central and Western Nebraska
